VIDA COTIDIANA DE JICAYAN is the Spanish translation of the Coastal Mixtec language book ÑA KAA IYO CHI ÑUU CHIKUA’A, by Josefa Leonarda González Ventura. Chapters on: fruit trees, wild trees, wells for fetching drinking water, and men’s and women’s clothing. Two chapters discuss why the village is called Ñuu Chikua’a in Mixtec and Jicayán in Spanish, and another details what happens when someone dies. The chapter in the Lienzo de Jicayán includes a discussion of how to read the Mixtec calendar. (Lienzo—Spanish for “canvas”—is a sheet of bark cloth painted with indigenous pictorial writing, in this case the post-colonial Mixtec text.)
